Saltwater stingray as pets

One thing in this hobby is the number of unique specimens out there and still being discovered. One that always captured by interest - A saltwater stingray
These unique creatures require a very large tank and are not for every hobbyist and require special care, filtration and attention.

I specifically had a Blue spot/blue dot species which had personality, was both social and active and their flat disc shaped body was an eye catcher. Feeding was not a challenge as I fed it shrimp, scallops, silversides, mussels and clams but the challenge was removing uneaten food and maintaining optimum water quality

How many have had a stingray or have entertained the thought of owning one?

I had one 20+ years ago. I would love another one day. I have toyed with putting one in my current 300G 96x30x24. i have the foot print and plenty of sand space with only a large center island of rock but I dont think I have all the equipment needed to keep up with it.

Had a blue spot myself and had a floating rock so had all sand bed to roam great fish and didn’t find if difficult to keep would love another just don’t see them often in uk anymore

No, wish I had pictures though. I miss that tank.

my tank was not ideal though. it was a 180G shallow
96x24x18 tall. had a pretty good foot print but it needed to be bigger. I got the ray from someone that had it in a 125 with a lion fish.
i only kept it for about a year before i felt it was to big for my 180

I would love to keep a stingray, but I don't see myself ever setting up a tank that large. If I ever have the space and means, a shark/ray tank would be high on my list, but I'd be inclined to do that in a 10-20' diameter pool rather than a traditional tank.

Stingrays are pretty cool. I had a bluespot years ago as well not as out going as the freshwater pearls I had maybe 6-7 years ago.

Oh I've definitely thought about it! Would love to have one some day...but not sure if that would ever happen.

Way tooo big. Often, while traveling over the deep blue in helicopters, we would see manta rays skipping out of the water. I can’t imagine any other reason to do that than for the sheer joy of existence.

I don’t doubt that the blue spot Ray has personality.

Being realistic, how big of a tank would it need? Do the blue spots get as big as (freahwater) the black diamonds sting rays?
would they be considered "reef safe"?

if you look around different sites say 300G minimum. I wish they gave a foot print of suggested Sq FT of sandbed instead.

I had a 48" cube that held 480G that there is no way in anyone's right mind they would put a ray in but my 300G DT has enough sq ft & minimum gallons (380G system) at 96x30x24 tall but i don't think its enough still.

Probably wouldn't work well, things would get knocked over. There is a guy local selling a 450G tank with a shark in it, but the tank is mostly bare so the shark has room to swim. I would love a shark but think a ray is actually more doable

300 minimum- 500-660g ideal

Sure do but I have yet to hear of any injuries within reef tanks
