So I really wanted to get a Watchman Goby, but I have CaribSea Hawaiian Sand, which is kind of coarse. Would the goby be able to sift it or should I avoid getting the little cutie?

I would advise against black sand, too many impurities. Probably lots of iron ie: good for algea. You can try one, and add a cleaner shrimp.

Coral banded or a scarlet. The cleaner shrimp may or may not clean the goby gills.

Gotcha, just get a yellow watchman/pistol pair…just as cute, fun to watch and would look cool against the black

I went with 50/50 black and white sand. I LOVE the look of it. My diamond doesn't have any trouble moving sand around as he sees fit. I got him specifically to stir up the sand and help keep it "clean". I haven't had any problems with algae at all, but I also bought my system used so the rock was already 10+ years old. Be aware those diamond gobies are jumpers and I lost a few to suicides overnight until I got a tighter fitting lid.
