Saved a Discus today

I don't know of any fresh water forums like this one, and wanted to share a victory in my freshwater tank this afternoon. I woke up to one of my discus struggling to stay up right, clearly suffering from swim bladder issues. I added freshwater aquarium salt to the tank (1 tbsp per 10 gal, mix in separate container) and maybe two hours later my little guy is swimming around perfectly fine. Kind of wish I could have seen the huge poop he let go once the salt went to work.

I was keeping discus prior to switching over to reefing. Love discus but oh so much work....

Discus will often display what appear to be swim bladder issues when not feeling well. There can be many causes for them to display these equilibrium type issues. I've had one smash into a piece of manzanita and float around funny for awhile until feeling better. I've seen them do somersaults or float listlessly when not feeling well for one reason or another. Sensitive fish no doubt

It was more than likely the constipation that you saw pass with the addition of salt. Epsom salt is always good to have on hand for this.

Tons of time! Reefing is so much easier. I grew out my beasts from a group of small juvies. Very heavy feeding and changing 80% of my 75 every other day... maintenance not fun but very rewarding fish to keep

For people that want discus but don't have the time for maintenance it's best to buy adult fish. Quality of stock is just as key as husbandry with discus
