Hi all,

My white tail tang died :( he was fine at 2am when i went to bed and woke up till him struggling and floating around not in full control so i removed him to a quarantine tank with fresh saltwater, i did a fresh rodi water dip for 3 mins in case it was fluke but nothing come out, he was already in struggle town and died 10 mins later, can anyone tell from the pictures what he died from?
I'm absolutely gutted and everything test fine and been in the tank 2 months and was the king of the tank so wouldnt put it down to bullying as he was the bully , only things that changed was i changed out my old rowaphos 100g to new rowaphos (100grams) and that was thoroughly rinsed to it run clear, some one said on facebook its velvet but I'm not sure as no white spots or dusting can anyone help with a diagnosis as don't want any more fish to die if its velvet the other fish look to be doing ok so far.

and certainly dont want to add another tang if my tanks infected any help would be greatly appreciated

cheers

My favorite understanding is that velvet kills rather quickly. I am thinking you should be able to rule velvet out if nothing wet has been added to the tank for 2 months.

So sorry for both of you.

Once a fish has passed it is difficult to tell what the cause was. Sometimes a microscope will help but the fish needs to be examined right after it has died. FW dips on sick Tangs are risky. They usually die shortly after or a few hours after the dip probably due to Hypoxia. Yours sounds like he was in very bad shape, so there was probably no saving him.
The timeline of your recent additions probably brought in a parasite so monitor your other fish closely. We recommend QT ing Fish. Live Rock is a grey area, but I would imagine it could harbor Parasite eggs also.

I would not rely on a my local LFS to quarantine anything. I doubt any of them would follow Jay's Protocol and so parasites slip through the cracks and I don't even want to think about Biosecurity. And many of the Employees just don't have the experience to do it correctly. I was at my LFS over the weekend and they had six or seven good size designer Clowns in a small Specimen Container for who knows how long. They looked stressed and were obviously forgotten until I spoke with the Manager.
