I'm new at this. Tank is doing well at 7 weeks. Minimal uglies! Thank you Gulf Live rock.
It's a mixed reef. Couple zoas, Duncan's, green leather and clover polyps.
Today I put in a toadstool.
Its about 5" from the nearest coral.
My questions are:
1. Do toadstools constantly release some level of toxins?
2. What triggers a larger release of toxins that will wipe out other corals? Does the damage show up immediately or is it over time?
3. Should I be running something from day one like GAC?
4. I like the idea of Polyfilter as I can cut it into small squares and a sheet will last me awhile in my 25gal AIO.
Will polyfilter remove the toxins?
Thanks in advance, look forward to responses.

IME toadstools love good flow, you can't give this one enough flow. Yes they do release toxins, but the toxins are very slow to act against neighboring corals, slow means it take several weeks to months to see negative reaction. But running activated carbon absorbs and nullifies the toxins. Toxins and other types are warfare are triggered when corals are too close and the coral wants to grow.

I have a large toadstool in my softie tank with corals pretty close to it, even touching it, I can't say I notice any negative reaction from toxins, however I do run activated carbon 24/7.

I don't know what pollyfilter is sorry. I wouldn't worry about the toadstool being aggressive, I would consider it a peaceful community coral. Good luck

I guess I'm still a little unclear, do they release toxins 24/7 or only when doing battle?
