Old thread but I am getting a Dollabella Sea Hare. I was curious about handling it. I can just grab it and place it in the tank right?

They are reef safe and somewhat delicate. They poop thru opening on theyr back. If distressed or dying, their opening starts to split open
Ink is a defense than toxin and I have yet to see one do it even when distressed. the dolabella which is California species eats well. Rarely do they survive on lettuce or seaweed sheets. best is to put them to work and start seeking a home for someone who can use them with an algae issue. The Dolabella Sea Hare can clean an entire 125 gallon reef tank of all hair algae in about two weeks as they are quite the efficient janitors and they also derive from Phillipines where the eggs of the Sea Hare are eaten as a delicacy. This delicacy is called in the Philippines Lukot or Lokot.

I have a sea hare in a 120 gallon and we have had it for 17 days. We see it in different areas of the tank so I know it's moving but it's always in the sand bed. Did yours start working immediately or did it take a little to acclimate to the tank first?

They work in shifts as a term and more active early morning and evening and will often rest at top of the tanl or behind a rock

In my experience, Sea Hares are very sensitive to N03. Anything over level of 10, and I've had a hard time keeping them. Anyone out there with a similar experience?

My LFS has had them in nitrates of 30-50 for weeks with no issues. My nitrates are around 50 but dropping as the carbon dosing is finally working. But my display has tons of algae.

Sea hates are short lived. I believe most we get are toward the end of thier lives.

Best hair algae solution out there, period. If you are looking for an algae miracle, this is it. Agree with short lived, 1 year was the longest I had one live. Get the dolabella, and watch for the “split” on the back end. They have two “holes”, that’s normal. But when a split starts to occur from the holes, best to euthanize as death is a few days away.

Pretty tough otherwise, I’ve had one get sucked into a Nero guard. Most of him was on the outside but a portion was on the inside! Took it out and performed surgery with tweezers, that is the first time I’ve seen one ink. Purple ooze out of the orifice. He had a small wound, but went on to live a few more months…
