Ok I have read way too many conflicting opinions on this matter. Are sea hares poisonous and do they nuke your tank when they die? that is the question also for supplemental information anyone have experience with these in smaller aquariums without a protein skimmer?

Not as easy as all that to answer. I've had one, and I've had one die, and had nothing happen to my tank, but I ran carbon at the time so I believe that it collected what toxins were released.

Oh yea I'm sure if you run carbon you will be fine. But In a more natural "low filtration system" would the sea hare be toxic. Do they even release toxins is actually the question. All of the retailers state they release "toxic" ink, while most hobbyist will say the ink is just a deterrent rather than a toxin it seems.

I know for sure a sea hare would be completely safe in a 120 with a large skimmer and carbon. But how about a 35 gallon with a 20 gallon refugium, small skimmer, and no carbon?

Good question. I'm not willing to go out on a limb and answer that. I had one, but....... Don't know the real answer for you. I never saw any ink though.
