Please help, hair algae dilemma

does anyone use electric toothbrushes so as not to slosh the water around too much?

i have been thinking doing that for a while .
as ive added a grounding pin to the system the other week i think i will buy myself a cheap one and try that out .

I have an old one that ive used a couple times, and it seems to work well, but i was wondering if i shouldnt be doing that.

I had a similar issue, broke down and used api algae fix, after 4-5 doses thing were looking much better. I just dosed as directed no issues , as far as clean up crew for my tank I tried everything, what worked best was fuzzy chiton, they clean everything off rocks. The fuzzy chiton are large size but worked well in my standard 75 gallon.

phosban reactor, carbon and icp tests including testing that rodi. your top off water may be part of the issue even if you think or it says it is 0tds there could be something else in there. grab and icp from amazon or somewhere else like this and within a few days you get some results. helped me immensely.

Ling time ago I had a version of this…. Not this exact model - was fully submersible and did a great job of cleaning algae off rock (make sure your running filter socks to get the algae as its scrubbed off).

I’m just getting back into the hobby and cannot find the exact scrubber I used to use, but this one is looks pretty close. I’m going to order one for when I need to spot clean. However, buyer beware, I havent used this exact product, just something very similar to it. Note: there are many versions of this available on Amazon - whatever you get must be fully submersible. Using something like this is infinitely better than a toothbrush.

Did you use this underwater? This seems better than the hygger one as that model is huge, and i wouldnt be able to get between my corals.with it

What tangs do you have if any? Tang gang for a reason. Feeding regime and flow?

Yellow tang and a regal angel are my 2 potential algae eaters but they dont touch the stuff.

I feed once a day, one cube of mysis and about a half a cube size of lrs reef frenzy

When I had GHA issues, I'd pull a rock or two out every water change. Used a nylon bristled kitchen brush to scrub it to death in newly mixed salt water. Then put it back in the tank. Rotated the rocks like that and it took 4-6 months. Really bad rocks got a time out in the sump after a scrub.

Yes, I left the rock in place and chose the best attachment to get at the patch of algae I was trying to get rid of. The particular model I had was designed for automotive detailing and was fully submersible. Works much better than a regular brush - no “sloshing” of tank water.

If you can remove the rock that has GHA, then that is best. You could scrub a bit and then spray hydrogen peroxide . However, once you get enough coral in place (or have a complicated enough scape that you don't want to move rock), having this little tool becomes a nice weapon in your arsenal.

Finally starting to win after all this time. All i did was started running about 1/2 cup of gfo in my filter cup, and on my weekly water changes i sucked the algae out into the dirty water bucket. Before i would just siphone the algae into a filter sock which made it look better but I imagine just reintroduced the spores back into the tank.

I also switched to tropic marin pro instead of Red Sea Coral pro to lower my magnesium levels.

Corals are starting to look better again as well
