Seaweed

Recently started feeding /keeping in my tank green seaweed (the ones you put on the clips) to my tang and who ever else pleases to eat it . I am almost out, however before I buy more is there a difference in the green, red, brown, and purple? Which should I feed? I've noticed the purple is more expensive then the rest perhaps this is better quality?

None. Buy the sea weed at you local oriental market. I buy mine already pre cut in the plastic jar.

Agree with jsker.....buy at your local oriental market. You want sushi algae....also called nori or laver. It comes in approximately 7x8 inch sheets. I usually get about 50 sheets for about 7 - 10 dollars. Although some might argue, roasted is OK. However, you want to make sure it's plain old algae.....no oils or salt added. I made that mistake once....didn't look closely. And certainly make sure you don't buy kelp....no fish will touch this.

Read the package carefully. If you are state side the label should be clear. Roasted it the best

Just be sure whatever you use contains "Seaweed" or "Roasted Seaweed" as the only ingredient. If it lists garlic or spices or anything else, don't use it.

What I meant was there are no Oriental market here.

That appears to be the right stuff. And wow, no oriental markets! I actually have a choice....about five within maybe a ten mile radius that I'm aware of.....and my favorite is H-Mart....very clean and a choice of 50 different algaes.


Now here's what I do when I get home with my package of seaweed.

I first cut it into quarters. I have a dedicated cutting board that has tape on it that helps center the nori. I typically take a bunch....maybe 10 - 15 sheets....and using a straight edge and sharp razor, cut the nori up and package in sandwich bags.





When I'm ready to feed, I take two of these smaller pieces and first fold it in half and cut on that fold using scissors.



I fold it again in half and cut once more on the fold:



This then goes into the algae clip where I now cut thin strips of up the length of the algae



When you're done cutting, you now have bite-sized strips for your fish to eat.



When I started feeding algae I didn't do this last step and my pig fish would rip out a whole sqaure of algae that would then float around the tank. Cutting into strips now gives them just the right size so that if it does get pulled out, they swim over to gobble it up.

Thanks. I'll be ordering some online today. I like the the last step, I thought maybe it. was just my fish who ripped off the whole piece.

Whatever your fish will eat works. I like to dip mine in Garlic Guard by Seachem (I think). It makes the fish love it that much more!
