I have a build in mind. Main tank 50 gal with ext overflow using a 75 gallon sump from my previous setup. Sump has a 2” bulkhead already. I would like to exit the sump with 2” pipe, ball valve, then a y. One side of the y to feed my ext pump and the other side just dead ended for now. Was thinking I could add another pump eventually to feed a future frag tank. Will this work? What am I not considering? Any input is much appreciated.

Try and keep as small a volume of unused, flooded pipe as you can, critters and gunk will build up in those dead sections of pipe quickly. In fact, if it was going to be a while before I was going to need it, I'd be tempted to _not_ put in the 'Y' quite yet. Plan for it, so it's easy to cut the pipe and add a Y, but leaving 'dead' areas in your piping, areas with water, but no flow, is something that I'd try and avoid.

Thanks for the response, that dead water idea did cross my mind. Your simple solution of of cutting it in later is just what I shall do. Now back to the drawing board....

What I'd do is run a single pipe into the pump and then wye the exit pipe from the pump. One of these would go to the DT, while the other will have a valve that, for now, returns to the sump. When you're ready to hook up the other tank, run that second line to that tank.

That’s a possibility but I’d like to try dc pumps that can be adjusted. My thought was if I wye before the pumps I would be able to easily control flow down both runs. I have no experience with the dc pumps so really not sure how it would operate.

Another thought is to place the second pump in the sump when that time comes but I prefer having pumps high and dry
