SO I'm going to Chicago in a few weeks and they were going to cancel their private tours at the end of this month but they just emailed me and they are still doing it. I'm really excited, sadly (and the reason why I'm posting here) is that you can't take photos. I'll try to describe the equipment! Anyone done this and recommends exhibits to check out? The 400,000 reef for sure in my #1, any others? Never been there, maybe the whales?

I’m a year membership holder at the Shedd do it all don’t skip any exhibits they are worth the money. The place is amazing they have special events for members like sleepover in the shedd it’s one of the coolest things I’ve done with my kids you sleep around the main tank so cool. Hope you have the time of your life there

Sure will, I'll see it all but the private tour includes up to three exhibits, so for the tour I only got three to pick to see what's in them.

The only private tour I ever got to take there was more on the medical side of things. My wife works at an animal hospital and they were the ones officially on the tour and I got to tag along. It was interesting seeing that side of things, including in the lab where they test water. One interesting detail is that EVERYTHING that dies there gets a necropsy done, even if it is a tiny fish. Sadly the person in the lab we spoke to didn't know much on the aquarist side of maintaining things since that is why they have aquarists.

As for things to see, certainly the beluga whales and pacific white-sided dolphins. They have sea lions and otters as well which are fun. The main tank is just cool to look at. Sadly not a living reef, but there are some smaller ones around if my memory is correct. Just plan time to walk around and take a look at everything. I personally am not that interested in the freshwater side so skip over those exhibits.

Ahh the main tank, the Whales and the Caribbean reef is what I would do

My favorite is always the shark tank!

Live in Illinois.....near Chicago in the burbs....never go.
Try to avoid Chicago entirely other than to see baseball. And even then I’d rather drive up to Milwaukee to see the Brewers so not to deal with the traffic and parking nonsense.
Chicago and getting around is a pain in the XXX!!

But have a great time and say hello to the fish for me.

I visited the Shedd many years ago, would love to go again !

The shark and reef displays are outstanding. Nice area and the museum of science and industry is nearby and well worth the visit especially if you have kids along

That place is one of my favorites to visit, havent been there in a few years. Dont miss anything! Plan to spend the whole day there!

Stay at a hotel in the suburbs and take the train into the city. Beats the traffic and parking troubles.
