Shopping for a new tank

Well this Friday was like most others. Decided to work from home (thank god). I was in my office when I heard the sound of water running. Well thad weird, maybe the ATO is malfunctioning? Nope full blown tank leak. Seam at the front bottom had a stream of water coming out. 5 year old Red Sea Reefer 300XL. 65 gallons just looking for a new home on my basement floor luckily I had plenty of 5 gallon buckets sitting around while I was able to get my 40g rubber maid tub emptied out. It’s temporarily the home of all the tank inhabitants while I figure out a new tank. Sent an email to Red Sea to see if they would sell me just the tank and plumbing. Baring that happening I was looking at either another one of those or maybe a Waterbox Marine X110 or an Eshopps White Mariner 70. Anyone know if either of those would let me keep using my Reefmat in the sump? I guess I could also just eke using the Red Sea sump with a new tank also. Anyway, not exactly how I thought my weekend would go!

I hope Red Sea has fixed their problems with their newer tanks, and im sure other manufacturers tanks can fail, but I don’t know if I’ve heard of anyone’s tank failing that was not a Red Sea.

Ok so I have a dilemma. Ordered a Waterbox 110 yesterday but apparently it won’t ship to around 9/15. I could switch it up and order an Eshoppps White Mariner and it would ship end of this week. Problem is I like the Waterbox more and it’s a little larger for the same price as the Eshopps. Think the fish and everything will be ok in the Rubbermaid container until the Waterbox can get here? It’s got the heater and all the rock, some of the sand. Reef LED 50 overtop it giving it the same amount of light that was in the actual tank. I have an internal filter in it for now and a carbon reactor running to it. Fish all come out to eat and seem to be doing ok.

As long as you run the Rubbermaid essentially the same way you ran your tank, you shouldn't have any problem with your livestock. Just keep in mind the basement floor (assuming concrete or tile) is likely to want to pull heat from the tote, so make sure your heater is up for a little bit of extra work. You may also want to make sure you cut back on feeding a bit, or make sure you keep detritus from building up on the bottom as you don't have any mechanical filtration at the moment.

I would make sure you have plenty of aeration and maybe pickup a small cannister filter or an in-tank submersible filter for some extra insurance. Did you hear from Red Sea? I wouldn't get a replacement tank from them even if they offered a substantial reduction in price. Probably cost more than a new setup.

I have a Red Sea reefer G2 myself, but given the opportunity to do it over, I would have gone with a waterbox. Their stands and tanks are sturdier, and their sump layout is more thoughtful and useable.

agreed. I wouldn't buy any Red Sea tank at this point in time.

Definitely. I did reach out to them to see if they would let me buy just a tank from them since I don’t need a full setup. They said no so I bought a waterbox instead
