Should I get the 40 long or 40 breeder sump?

Someone on marketplace is selling this 40 gallon LONG sump. 48x12

I don’t think. I won’t it becuase the 1’ is rather narrow , and if I have a 4’ I would prefer a 4x1.5 sump (like a 60-75) or should I get an empty 40 gallon breeder 3x1.5 and put in the baffles myself?

I use a DIY 40 breeder sump and enjoy the open-ness of it. It really depends on the sump space you have available!

If you would prefer the 40b size, get the other size. Seems simple enough to me

$50 for that one and no extra work on baffles seems like a decent deal to me, if you have the room in the cabinet for it

I ran a 40 breeder on my old 120 and 45 frag system. No baffles. The frag system was split so I could turn dead into colorful live rock.
In my 120 no baffles made it very easy to work in.

Do you find that its big enough for filter socks protein skimmer and a refugium that isnt really small?

Considering havingf external return pump to reduce crampedness, somoene is selling a 40 breeder for $35

I do have approx 6' of cabbinent space, and 20" wide so both will fit, but I'm just not sure about that 12" FtB space in the 40 long!

I don't like tight chambers and I chose to run a large fuge instead of a protein skimmer. In my opinion and experience, a skimmer is counterproductive to a well-functioning fuge, but if you are set on having both, the long might be better so you can have more, smaller chambers.

All baffles can be removed and placed however you like with silicone. I wanted a refugium section. But it can be removed or shortened

Are these too small to use?

Also, wont a 40 gallon long be more dangerous for overflowing?

where would you put the skimmer?

I don't think a 40 long vs breeder would make any difference for danger of overflow, same volume unless you have different (higher) running water depths.

idk math says every 1" verticla is like 2.5 vs 2.9 gallons so the 40 long will overflow faster!
Could be misunderstanding that, though!!

but you have only 3 chambers, right? I'm asking because you don't want skimmer in the fuge where it will get clogged, and you don't want it in a chamber where the water level changes.

Sure the math on overflow makes sense, my point is at any rate you can adjust your running sump water depth to ensure it can handle your overflow

I wonder if it's a 55 gal; didn't know they made a 40 long. Regardless it's not a bad sump imo. 4 socks is good and when/if you get sick of them you can probably remove the sock pad to fit a filter roller down the road (if you wanted; options are good).

It matched my basic flow/baffles already left to right; just a bit more polished than I could make it...and...it was on sale lol. I think it's a good design to replicate imo

I think im going with a 40 Breeder, as an externall pump (which I want... more room in the sump for... sumpin'!) + 48" of sump would eat up alot of my cabinent





Did you make the baffles yourself, or are they an EBAY kit?
For both cases, how much did it cost you!

It was the fiji (cube?) kit. No complaints about it. The silicon around the filter sock chamber started to show wear and tear from pullin on socks, so it needed to be redone and I originally made the skimmer chamber too small , based off an undersized skimmer I was using at the time so those failures were on me; decided to upgrade instead. Doing it yourself though, you have so much flexibility in chamber size, etc. which is nice and tbh the fun part for me to come up with the design and build it out.

I have a 40 breeder with the Fiji Cube kit installed. I'm happy with it.
