Just got into the tilefish game.

Waiting on a dusky to be delivered tomorrow.

Beautiful! How long have you had the purple and skunk? I just placed an order for a purple one myself, but I'm waiting for the store to tell me how big it is, since I'm trying to add a smaller one to my skunk. Really really wanted another yellow tile, but I can't find a single one available anywhere.

My LFS looks like it's getting a shipment of purple tilefish. I refunded the last one I ordered because I realized it was pretty large and I've been hoping to find a smaller one that could bond with my skunk.

Has anyone had success keeping 3 tilefish in a 75g tank? I'm wondering whether a pair of purples + a single skunk could work. Also, would they eventually turn on my skunk? I feel like I have plenty of caves and hiding spots but I'm still not sure if I'd be pushing it with 3 instead of the 2 I originally planned.

Bump, they just arrived and I'm really tempted to get a pair. Do you know of anyone who's kept 3 in 75g successfully? @i cant think

Just look at them! We almost never see tilefish here in Canada, they're so rarely in stock.

I would try it if you aren’t overstocked. I had two that did great without any bad behavior. I can’t imagine tiles getting aggressive with any other tiles or other fish for that matter. They are like dopey puppies.

Thank you! My current stock is Dwarf Sole, Sunburst Anthias, Yellow Multibanded Pipefish, Link's Goby, Terelabrus Wrasse, Yellow & Purple Wrasse, Skunk Tilefish, Macneill's Assessor Basslet.

The only larger fish is really just the tilefish. I do still plan on adding a butterfly. My skunk actually charges at my wrasse sometimes, since the wrasse just looks like a mini version of him, but it's usually just one chase and done... Weirdo 😆

I’d get a pair, especially if they settle down well at the shop.

I’ve seen people with groups of 6 tiles in similar size tanks and never seen an issue. I personally would love a display system with just tilefish at my shop, but my wrasse addiction will never allow it. By the way… Why have we never seen the Terelabrus? 😉

You have convinced me, haha! I've been in touch with the store to try to find me a pair, so I can pick them up next weekend.

And I posted about my wrasse, actually! Found the post here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/the-wrasse-lovers-thread.113942/post-13880173

Here's a more recent pic. It's been such a great fish, but he is a bit similar to a skunk tilefish, and Sushi sometimes doesn't like that 😆

That first picture makes him look like a villain! That actually begs a question, has anyone ever noticed their tilefish harming any inverts in the tank?

I keep hearing about how it's possible they might eat them, but I've never witnessed Sushi doing that, although I do find an empty shell here and there (mostly blaming my hermits for that). The only time I saw him interacting with a snail was when it was blocking the entrance to his burrow. He just picked it up angrily and moved it aside lol.

Tiles never bothered my snails urchins or conch. However, when my babi matured it removed 20+ nassarius snails from the sand bed.

Oh wow, I'm gonna need to keep an eye on mine then. So far those have been the most resilient ones, not even hermits bother them.

It does. I love that picture because of that.

He’s actually named Calvin because that pic reminded me of the villain alien by the same name.

I would consider putting black paper on the sides and back to make them feel more secure. Wouldn’t want them to hit that coral skeleton.

Today's video from feeding. The smaller tile is very curious and active, very aggressive feeder, and the larger one is more cautious, but both seem to be doing great so far :)
