I have an Antenna lionfish that is about 3-3.5 inches long that is currently in a 20g long with some macroalgae and a couple ricordia mushrooms. This is a temp home and I have to dose nitrate and phosphate to keep Nitrate about 8-10ppm and phosphate around .05ppm. I performed an ammonia test with an API test kit and get 0 for ammonia. I haven't set up my dosing pump yet but alk fluctuates between 6 and 8 dkh. I haven't been great about manually dosing and is why it has larger swings over a couple days. Ca is around 430 and Mg around 1480. This is all with Hannah checkers except ammonia.
The lionfish gets fed 2 guppies or 2 ghost shrimp every other day and let's me know when he is hungry. He hasn't eaten in about 4 days and acts lethargic and looks a little sickly. He sits out in the open more, which isn't normal for him, and if I nudge him a little bit he won't move where in the past if I have gotten near him with the baster then he would swim away. I haven't tried feeding him but whenever I put the net in the tank he would always come swimming right up to the net and he doesn't do that right now.
I am fighting dinos and have been for a little while now. I thought it was because phosphate was at 0 but I have since fixed that and phosphate always stays above 0 now. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the condition of the lionfish? I heard that dinos can be toxic but not sure if that is true. The dinos get bad the longer the lights are on and mostly clears up when lights turn off.
I'm not sure what is causing the lionfish distress. I do know they can stop eating from time to time and that they can get parasites. I do have some general cure if anyone thinks that would help? Not sure, if it's a water quality issue, although all perimeters seem to be in check or if it's maybe internal parasites, I'm open to suggestions. I did add a air bubbler to a power filter in case it was dissolved oxygen. That was a problem. It's only been 24 hours but it hasn't seemed to help. I also did about a 25% water change and that doesn't seem to have helped either. Salinity is slightly high at 37 ppt. That doesn't seem that high to me but I don't. I think that's all the info that you need, but if there's something else let me know. TIA Jason
