I run mine daily but let them overflow every other day before changing. This coincides with a heavy feeding the nights before. I may change this though with the more porus sock.

Here's a pic of the type of material that I've been using from Jo-Ann craft stores. Hopefully this clears up uncertainty for anybody nervous about this.
One quick note though, my skimmer goes nuts for a little while whenever I put a new sock in but nothing major.
My tank is mostly zoas and acros with low nutrients.

Yeah, I should try rinsing them first. It doesn't seem to bother anything but the skimmer if I don't, or does somebody know otherwise?

Yah my skimmer has always freaked out also. I've tried rinsing in Rodi but it didn't seem to change anything.
