Hi,
I accidentally siphoned a few tentacles from my torch coral. It's only one head and has retracted for almost a week now. Should I be concerned? Thanks all.
 
It’s not uncommon for torch corals to retract after being stressed. Here’s what you can do to help it recover and assess if there’s a bigger issue:

1. Inspect the Coral:

  • Look for tissue damage: Check if there’s tissue recession near the base of the head. If the skeleton is exposed, monitor for signs of infection or further tissue loss.
  • Check for brown jelly disease: This is a common infection in stressed Euphyllia corals. If you notice a slimy, brown substance, you’ll need to act quickly to save the coral.

2. Double-Check Water Parameters:

  • Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
  • Calcium: 400-450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: 5-10 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.01-0.03 ppm
  • Temperature: 76-80°F
  • Salinity: 1.025-1.026 specific gravity

3. Double-Check Placement and Flow:

  • Flow: Ensure it’s in a moderate flow area. Too much flow can irritate the coral, while too little might not keep it clean.
  • Lighting: Avoid sudden changes in light intensity. Torch corals prefer moderate to high light.
Correct any imbalances gradually to avoid further stress.

4. Feeding:

  • If it starts extending its tentacles again, offer small, meaty foods like mysis shrimp to support its recovery. This isn't necessary, but see if it helps.

5. Patience:

  • It’s normal for torch corals to take a while to recover from stress. Keep monitoring it, but don’t disturb it further.
If it shows signs of recovery (e.g., slight tentacle extension), that’s a good sign. However, if the coral begins to deteriorate further, or if you’re unsure about its condition, isolating it in a quarantine tank might prevent the spread of disease to other corals.

Yeah, it's totally stressed out. Looks like there's some algae on it also, so it would help if you pulled that off because sometimes that's a bit irritating (try your best not to touch the tentacles). The alveopora and goni are doing well so I don't think theres anything wrong with any parameters- just that specific coral. Make sure theres a good amount of white tissue, because you don't want that to recede unless it's trying to split. I'd just continue to keep your parameters in check and try not to fiddle with it too much.

This is a picture of brown jelly disease. I can't really tell, but if there is anything like that on it, you're definitely going to have to act soon to get rid of it.
