Skimmer too large

I recently came into a bundle of equipment of which was a new in box Skimz sv227. I am running a 90 gallon with what I would guess to be a heavier bioload. This skimmer is rated for 170 heavy load all the way to 300 gallons on a light load.

Is my system far too small to run this skimmer? I am hoping not as the skimmer is quite the upgrade over my current one.

I'm shure you're good. Is it 90 total volume? You can just run the skimmer on low setting and turn it on/off

90 gallon display and another 30 gallons in the sump

Most companies are over rating their skimmer spec, including Bubble King and many other brand names (excluding maybe just only A&C?)

Anyway, many of us SPS dominated tank owners are actually deliberately looking for up to double the rated heavy bioload for skimmers, so if you really do have a heavy bioload and you target low nutrients - then you should be good to go.

I have a Vertex 180i on my 170

I have to dump the cup every day

(It has a smaller footprint than the Vertex 150 and 130 I have)

Hi - can you please elaborate on why running an oversized skimmer is especially important on a SPS dominant tank? Is it due to the idea of running a low nutrient system?

Fish poo and coral food is good for Acropora. If left in system too long it will decay adding nitrates and increasing DOC. The oversized skimmer helps remove the coral food and fish poo before it breaks down. Skimmers also help maintain relatively high pH by improving gas exchange. This is an important factor in stony coral growth.
Most Acropora keepers like heavy nutrient in and heavy nutrient out. Lots of fish and food requires lots of removal.

Awesomeeee, makes sense… I’m running a Maxspect sk200 on my fluval 32 gallon (Fiji cube 24 sump), that I have heavily stocked with fish and I plan on doing a SPS dominate tank… I know that skimmer is overkill for my system but hopefully it all works out lol

Is there anything wrong with your current skimmer?

If you are happy with the current skimmer, and are considering this new one strictly because of the upgrade, I'd keep current one.
