I’m looking to buy a protein skimmer for aquarium. I have a 60 gallon breeder with a 20 gallon sump.

I’m seeing a lot of good things being said about reef octopus and so the models that fit in my sump are the 110-int, 110-sss, and 150-sss.

Which one should I get? I’m unsure of the differences between the classic, regal, and elite versions so I’ll just be getting one of the classic models.

Do you have any idea of the bio load that you are expecting? Are you hoping for a lot of fish, just corals, or maybe a moderate mix of each? I have or have had all of those three skimmers and they are all bullet-proof. I would lean toward the 110. The sss or int will depend on the size of the skimmer chamber in your 20g sump. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I’ve had the classic 110 internal and a 150sss. If you are not going to have a heavy bioload and the 110 will fit your skimming needs, it does have one advantage over the SSS models and that is when it is time to clean the pump, the SSS models are a pain. The Reef octopus, though, has been a great skimmer in many of my tanks!
