skin for stand question

The stand I am building is all 2x4 and then 1" cherry for the top where the tank sits, the question I have is when making the panels (skin) for the stand and canopy is 1/8" plywood too thin? The door frames will be 1"x2"

1/8 inch is pretty thin....so it would depend on how long the stand is. As an example, if it's a six foot stand, I'd think about putting in two vertical 1 by's to stiffen up the panel. Otherwise, if it truly is a skin.....no doors....it should be just fine. If you add a door in the middle of the skin, just frame out the opening to add the needed support. I hope what I said is clear and makes sense.

Its a total length of 44"x34" , I can get 1/4" for the same price but I might have to jump up to half inch as the local stores dont have 1/4"

You could use inset magnets to attach to the stand if it's 1/2".

Agreed, 1/8" is pretty floppy. 1/4" also gives you a better base if you want to secure wires or equipment to the skin inside.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I follow what you want to do. Are you asking about building a stand or an aquarium out of wood?

If it helps, I built a 4'x4'x24" high "pond" on my deck this year. This was made from 2x6's, but that's the same thickness as 2x2's.

Not strong at all… look at how plywood and lumber forms for concrete pours are made; 2x4 and larger on edge! — granted, concrete is heavier than water; but the same principles apply!

I have the same question! Plywood isn’t really intended to bear load unsupported for any appreciable amount of span; so the majority of what this expensive ply does is provide a smooth, plane surface…

— I agree that 1/8” plywood is awfully thin for side skins, even if only because it’s floppy, and it likes to break if looked at funny… it’s best suited to cladding other sheets of material! You could consider using 3/8”-1/2” construction plywood, skinned with 1/8” veneer though!

I've got some 5/4 cherry and some other hardwoods in shop's lumber rack, but that was 5/4 pressure treated
