I've seen this fish pop up at a few places lately, what makes them so rare? I don't see them in any forums so I'm guessing not many people have much experience keeping them. Anyone here have one in their tanks?

Unless you put a ‘reference dime’ in that photo and prove me wrong, I’m claiming that that fish is HUGE! (Lol ;Smuggrin). That probably has a lot to do with it. But beautiful, indeed.

I don't have any first hand knowledge, but my brother bought a leopard grouper for his 75 gallon FOWLR before researching it. Apparently most of the groupers get very large and will eat whatever they can fit in their mouths. They also have big mouths. It wasn't long before my brother had to re-home his grouper. That's probably why you don't see many in the aquarium world.

+1 to @Aquanut. In fact, “if” I had the tank size required for a grouper, for me it would be the Panther Grouper, hands down. You’ve got to love the way they swim (not to mention the obvious look they have).

Fishy business just had one for sale, you could look at this one just as the panther grouper. A good looking fish when smaller, grows fast and very large, kind of drab and unattractive when larger.

I ended up buying him as I wanted a grouper in my tank. I don't like the panther's tiny head and big body, it bothers me how disproportionate it is. I'm washing him right now in the sink with his friends.

That grouper is going to eat both of those fish eventually. The six line wrasse within a week... how big is your tank? What other fish do you have?

I have other big fish. It's a 300. If he catches that 6 line then he deserves a nice meal because there's a lot of rock in the tank.

he will get them eventually> they are fast!!

I love Anyperedon groupers! They get about 2' long, so big for most tanks, but not bad for a grouper. They are not as aggressive as other groupers wither.

He WILL eat anything he can fit in his mouth, so that means just about anything the size of his body or smaller. Being slender, deep bodied fish are usually safe.

I got one today he is probably only 3-4 inches but they are quite beautiful and from what I have read they are not as aggressive but because of their head taking up a large portion of their body length they can gobble down some decent sized fish. Still worth it though as in my opinion they are some of the better looking grouper.
