It's a whelk and it's not a good reef inhabitant. Look it up to be sure.

Take another look. On one the shell goes in straight lines from front to back, the other one the shell curls around the axis. Then look at your photo. I've seen enough of those hitchikers to identify them without looking them up, I just do that for your verification.

I think you are right... now I feel bad throwing it in the river :(
i had two baby ones and my baby hermit thought their shells looked cozy so he killed them and stole their shells :( they are kind of cool one of my favorite so far, only like 6 months into my tank though so still discovering
