Randy, I purchased some sodium nitrite and not sure how to mix and how much to dose. my phosphate stays a little high, but not nitrate. I have attached a recent Triton test to show my phosphate level. I have been feeding a bunch to get nitrates up but it just raises my phosphates. Thanks

I mix 6 grams of NaNO3 with 100ml of RO/DI Water. One ml of this mixture raises 100 gallons of seawater approximately 0.1 ppm of Nitrate. I mix small batches since I only use a few mls daily.

The above is not perfectly calculated. It is close enough for good managed dosing.

If you don’t have a gram scale I did the conversion for you: 1 level teaspoon (the kind used in baking, not the kind used to eat with) = 7.4 to 7.6 grams of NaNO3. The reason for the range of 7.4 to 7.6 is the NaNO3 has some round balls in it and it is hard to get a perfectly level teaspoon so I did several measurements and my level teaspoon always ended up in the 7.4 - 7.6 gram-range...good enough for me. To make the formula I mentioned, find a clean container, preferably a glass mason jar or similar and add 125 ml of RO/DI water (or you can use RO if you don't have the DI). To that 125 ml of water, add 1 level teaspoon of NaNO3 andmix till clear.

Using the above formulas 5 ml of the mixture will raise 100 gallons of water by 0.5 ppm of Nitrate (10 ml will raise 100 gallons by 1 ppm Nitrate; 20 ml will increase it by 2 ppm). The formula is not exact since a level teaspoon is not as accurate as a gram scale, but the variance is only about 10% which is insignificant for dosing.

BTW

Thank you so much this has been so useful since I don’t have a scale been referring to this post every time
