Something wrong with this naso?

Just need a sanity check here... Seems to me this fish has to work too hard to get around. Not sure if I'm just paranoid of if there is really something wrong with him. Took this video with all wave makers turned off.

It seems like it’s just checking out the rock for something to graze on. Feed on the opposite side of the tank and see if it swims faster.

It does look like it is working at swimming to me. I have a big blonde and it doesn't labor like that. Is it eating good? How long have you had it?

He plows down nori, but just seems like he's "floppy" when he swims and uses his front fins too much.
He spent 4 weeks in QT. Been in the display about 1.5 weeks.

He looks ok to me. I'm actually jealous that you're able to get your fish to stay out when you approach the tank. I walk up to mine and everyone darts for behind the rocks even with nori put out lol

Generally, tangs swim with their pectoral (front) fins most of the time, and use caudal (tail) fin when they need to get somewhere quickly. Naso spp can swim a little differently than a yellow, or hippo, or whatever...They are shaped differently.

Yours seems maybe a little off, but otherwise healthy.

I’d say this is a tang that is either weak or “off” somehow. It almost looks like it’s “not all there”.

Have you seen this fish have any sudden darts or immobilizing seizure type behaviors? Many times they can lead to this type of behavior that may correct itself or ultimately the fish perishes. This type of thing is uncommon, however. I’ve only seen it a few times.

I do think something is wrong but I’m not sure that there’s much you can do. It is possible badly conspirated, see if you can get it to eat a pealed pea (can help with constipation). It certainly can’t hurt to try a boiled and pealed pea if he’ll eat it.

Other than that I’d observe and hope for the best. Did the fish progressively worsen or is this more sudden do you think?

I agree something looks off. Never seen any strange behavior other than how it swims. He eats anything I put in the tank and cruises around all day but looks off balance and "floppy". Notice how he swims head up? I thought it was because of all the flow in my tank. This is why I turned the wave makers off for these videos.

It could also be a swim bladder starting to become infected. If it worsens and the fish becomes overly buoyant that could be your culprit.

It can help, consuming a wide spectrum of antibiotics and adding them in to the water can help.

I'd feed metroplex, kanaplex, and furan 2 in food and add seachem focus to bind the meds. You'll likely need to add garlic to make it palatable for the fish. You should use these same three meds in the water (in quarantine) for 10-14 days as well should you go this way.

Sounds good. I think I'll leave him in the display for a few more days and observe. I have metroplex and kanaplex on hand but not furan 2. I will order some today in prepartion for treatment. I don't have garlic, but I do have selcon? Will that suffice or shall I add garlic to my shopping list?

Just thought I'd follow up on this old thread just in case someone else runs into a similar issue.

I pulled the Naso out of the the display and put him back in QT. First I ran through a full dose of API General Cure and performed the water change as directed.

For 2 weeks I fed mysis soaked in metroplex and focus. Then for 2 more weeks I feed mysis soaked in kanaplex and mysis. The fish is swimming much better and was placed back in the main tank yesterday! WOOT!
