Just snapped the glass on my allready drilled, almost finished 55. Anyone wanna donate a 55 to the cause and drill it for me?

I somewhat know how you feel. I had spent a lot of time and money getting a little 30g Oceanic ready and did the same thing. We drilled it at a club meeting and I did it the way everyone was telling me too and once I had it drilled, it just popped and cracked all the way through. I ended up ordering a piece of glass and drilling it myself at home, the way I wanted to and it went smooth as silk. :) The tank has now switched hands 3 times and it still going strong.

I ended up ordering a piece of glass

that was going to be one of my recommendation. i drill a 55 on hte side , its craked from the hole up to the top while messing with the plumbing. the hole was on the bottom. i just left it removed all the silicon in that area and added another piece of glass and drill that one though the broken on. been working fine so far. and to make sure i was going to be happy i grabed the plumbing and pulled it back and forth and it seemed to be much stronger now.

Yeah from what I understand 55g are tempered all around.

a lot are, some are not, i guess it veries on the tank, maker and age. i can only say thank god , my wasnt.

Mine was an old tank and not tempered. We drilled the back glass, and that is the one that popped. Oh well live and learn...UPGRADE!!!!!!!!

FYI only 55 gal that I know of that were tempered were the perfectos with the black silocone all others I have drilled without problem ...Black silicone is the tell tale sign!! but of course all bottoms are tempered!!!!!

Well a little update. Im picking up a new to me tank next week. Its a 72" x 18" x 22" 120 gallon oceanic rimless. Woot. Internal overflow(Ill use a durso). 100 bux...yay

I cant wait...should be alot better than my crap 55.

I remember when that happened.
Total shock when it popped.

Went and looked at the tank, its huge. Well huge for me anyway.

Only thing I dont like is the huge center brace in the middle. Im using a single bulb MH, and this is going to cast a large shadow in the center of the tank, as well as, cut down on my PAR a lot.

What would you guys do to eliminate this?

Id like to do two as well, but the problem is I dont have two. Ill have to see if I can trade someone straight up. I even modified my ballast with fans. dang!
