Crank up powerheads and create a sandstorm/purge detritus.
Replace mechanical filter media after a little while when they are full of the newly filtered out funk.
Follow the melevs reef program for reducing nitrates.
dose NoPox

figure out a way to implement a natural nitrate reduction process. (Scrubber, refuge, reactor etc).

Do water changes but inferequently- 10-15% probably edequate.
Also add Chemipure blue, not just carbon and reduce white intensity and at lights out, dose Hydrogen Peroxide at 1ml per 10 gals for 2 weeks.
I have a little now and am using liquid Vibrant and will be followed by Peroxide

+1 for algae scrubber. 2 week trip and tank looked bad. Added a scrubber, + water changes. With the scrubber, I feel more comfortable letting someone else care for the tank while I'm gone.
