Split Caudal Fin

My target mandarin’s caudal fin is split horizontally, right down the middle. From photos, I’ve gathered that this isn’t normal. He’s been in the tank over a year, though, and it doesn’t seem to be getting worse.

Could this just be a physical abnormality?
 
Just got a good shot of it. Sorry for the blues. Didn’t have a chance to grab my filter.

My mandarin had split caudal and dorsal fin when I got them from the LFS and both healed up within 1 week. Here’s a pic about 1 week later.
