SPS stning

Over the last few weeks more and more of my sps have begun to stn.

Water parm
Cal 450 red sea test kit
Alk 8.4 red sea test kit
Mag 1400 red sea test kit
Po4 .00 hanna checker
No3 .00 red sea test kit
Tds 0
Salinity 1.025 refractometer. I also confirmed it is calibrated using two differwnt solutions

Checked for pests on multiple corals day and night but dont see any.

Changed carbon and gfo with no positive results. Perform weekly water changes of 15%. One thing I discovered yesterday is when I open my turbo twist uv, is that the coating had a bunch of rust on it. I changed 60 gallons of water on my 200gallon tank tonight. Could it be possible that is the issue?

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

They're probably starving. 0 nitrate, 0 phosphate, UV sterilizer.... What are they supposed to eat?

are you sure Is rust In the UV? or Is algae?

Good point. I will back way off on vinegar and also feed the corals a few times a week. To try to get the nitrates up a little. Thinking maybe cut back water changes to bi weekly also.

At first I thought it was brown algae. So I wiped it all down and it was still there. So I pulled that silver lining out and saw it was rust. I completely took it offline to be safe.

At what point/color do stop your alk test to get 8.4? The reason I ask is, I was stopping mine when the blue turned red/orange like red seas video and was getting 9.2-9.8. I thought it was the right reading until I bought the Hanna Alk test. The reading with the tester was 1dkh difference 8.2-8.8. The only way I could get this reading with red sea, was stopping when the blue turned grey before red/orange. You could be in the low 7's and that could cause stning.

I'm going to bet this is your problem. I've seen many sps tanks rtn/stn because of rusting magnets on frag racks.

Do you know the best way to reverse these effects? Im running polypad and did a 60 gallon change last night.

Very hard to say cause, just guessing at best

If it's on the tips it's usually a swing in alk, temp, or salinity - gfo and vinegar both make corals more susseptable to smaller swings in these parameters

If it's from the bottom it's usually lighting or flow - as corals grow they change shadows and flow patterns in the tank

I doubt it was the rust but ???

Regardless, small regular water changes are always good. And feeding your fishes a bit more and taking the uv off line might also help. IMO you don't need a uv anyway
