i was just wondering should the clam sit on the side on the shell or sit straight up with the mantle up?

While i've never owned one, all the pictures and videos i've seen of them has them sitting straight up with the mantle facing the light so they can absorb your light source :)

Usually mantle up. They need the mantle to collect the sunlight and get food in the water column.

Typically you want mantle up. Clams are known to move so keep an eye on flow, lighting, etc.
