Stand and overflow...help

Not been on in a long time but I have some questions on my new build....40b w/40b sump/fuge.

I have an Oceanic 4ft 120 stand I would like to use with my 40b for the extra space underneath for equipment...Wife is on my *** big time about getting my fish junk up and out of the way.

Question 1:
Can I just add say a 3/4 top to the stand for the 40 to sit on? Will that be enough?
or should I get a pocket hole jig add some supports and use 1/2 top? I will strip,stain and add trim to make it look as nice as possible.


Question 2:
I want to maximize the space inside the tank so I have decided to go with an external coast to coast with beananimal's overflow....I know I have to remove the top trim from the tank...What is the best tool for the job to cut the notch in the glass? I have a dremel.

I have an old 29g tank in the garage that I can use to make the overflow...What would be the best dimenions for the overflow?..How far down should I cut the notch from the top of the tank 1/4"...1/2".....what size pvc should I use....1" or 1 1/2".

I was thinking 30"x?x? for the overflow

Could get away with a plywood top but it might be a wise idea to add a cross member to strgthen it right where the tank sits....

i own my own construction company and i build my own sweet custom stand and still i added the cross bar in the middle for my 90g. the 3/4 would be fine for sure. for the glass i would not touch that part i would do some serious research befor doing that alone.
