Hello, I have just purchased a Feather Duster which I am currently acclimating. I have noticed a starfish attached to the base of it. Can anyone identify it for me and let me know whether it would be a problem to keep? I’m aiming to establish a reef. Thank you.

It could be a gibbosa.

Can you get a pic of it in a cup with it laying flat? Remove from feather duster.

Hello. Yes, have just removed it.
I wouldn't add that guy to the reef.

Edit: If that was mine, I would add it to my reef to see what it does. But, since I don't know much about that one. I wouldn't tell anyone to add it to their tanks.

I think it may just be the photo and distortion from the bag, but that thing looks huge in the pic.

Sorry for the late reply. I haven’t kept them before; I’m new to this. It is currently doing well, remains big and is out in full show most of the time. I’m going to be monitoring the calcium levels closely.

It was a large specimen. I took it back to my local fish shop, from where I bought the feather duster, and they also commented on its large size.

Not the standard issue astrinia that I have seen and they never eat my coral in fact the population seems stable and does not grow to large and that may be due to a competition between other small invertebrates in my system. These photos are the standard issue astrinia in my system that do well but never are a problem!
