Alrighty so I have recently come into a situation where I am getting a 265 gallon and nearly all the fish that is in it. (plus I have a few of my own to add) My question is it it overstocked? The owner says no but I'm not so sure. The list is as follows

2x Regal Tangs
Powder Blue Tang
Sailfin Tang
Scopas Tang
Purple tang
Coral Beauty Angel
Flame Angel
Koran Angel
7x Chromis
Banggai Cardinal
Orang Spot Goby
Blue Velvet Damsel
Golden Damsel

In addition I am having to get the fish first before the tank itself and only have a 75 gallon and a 30 gallon to house them in for a few months. They are not all full size (about 91in of total fish) but I am still concerned. Should I get a couple of cheap 50 gallon breeder tanks with on the back filtration for the time being?

Thanks for your help and Ideas!!!

What are the dimensions of the 265?

Are the two regal tangs already living together? What fish are you adding or is that the complete list?

In my opinion, yes it’s overstocked, but I am not a fan of overstocking tanks. I have a 450g/8ft with 5 tangs and 20 small fish.

I would get some extra tanks to house everything. Make sure your filtration is up to par especially for the tangs.

I only know that the length is 7ft

As for the fish list that's the complete with my additions. I currently have a sailfin, foxface rabbit, and two clowns. The others are already together minus the purple tang, flame angel, and scopas. which are in smaller separate tanks from what I understand.

Ok, that’s a good length for side to side swimming.

So adding the scopas, purple and sailfin together may become an issue. Maybe that’s why he has them separate. If you are going to try it add them all at the same time. Their territories should be broken up since you will be moving the tank and that may help.

Tang aggression is a pain sometimes. You’ll have to figure out what works a d what doesn’t and have a back up plan to possibly rehome some.

Awesome that's what I thought. So I could work but would still be overstocked correct which could lead to more aggression?

In my opinion yes it would be overstocked…especially if you account for the full size of the fish.

Hippos get pretty big 10” or so
Koran gets big
Sailfin can get huge
Foxface gets rather large

Powder Blues can be come more aggressive with time.

Do you have a plan for nutrient control? Will this be fish only or a reef tank?

it will have some reef probably only sps because of the koran angel. it comes with a full apex system/trident with protein skimmer and refugium in the sump.

Ok, just keep in mind the higher the fish load the harder it is to control nitrates and phosphates. Just something to consider.
