I was wondering if any of you all have had a stony coral naturally reproduce in your tank by releases cells in the water column, budding, etc.

The only stony coral ive ever had to naturally repruduce is my "branching" plate,I still dont know what it is but i have these plates that grow to about the size of a dime on the side of a candy cane coral and then naturaly fall of..i have 2 a 3rd is growing atm.

Also if anyone has ever purposly made a coral naturally reproduce by adjusting flow, pars, light patterns, etc. please reply to this thread, ive never heard of anyone naturally growing/reproducing corals in their tank..

Stony coral produce in captivity sometimes.

There are videos on the internet where acropora have spawned, along with frogspawns and pieces like that, however,it has never happen to me!I have had anemones spawn though!

What you're talking about sounds somwhat similar to what's happening in a friend of mines tank. He has this coral that continually sprouts what looks to be a fugia of some sort with white and red coloration. When it gets to about nickel size it falls off and starts to grow a new one...

Cool, I wish that would happenn with my chalices, would be easier than fragging all the time, hahahaha

So did they actually attach to something and grow into adults or do they just get sucked up in the pumps?

Mine is green with white "zebra" type stripes. Maybe his is a red version of mine! Idk what its called but its interesting

I've heard of pocillopra doing this quite often in captivity. I read one thread where they spread all over the tank.

If they are able to find a spot in a rock and settle, they will grow!As gar732 said, pocillipora's are known to do this,my friend has this happen to him,his Tyree Rainbow Stylo had spawned, and some of the eggs/larve,whatever,were able to find spots to grow.

I've heard that too, but not sure if they spawned or just released some of their polyps which eventually attached.

I've seen Frogspawn release bits of tentacles that look like bubbles, tried to capture them and put them into a protective enclosure so they don't get sucked up but they always just shrink into nothing.

Wow i wish I owned a rainbow stlyo! and if it reproduced naturally, that would be insane!

What do you all think plays the biggest role in natural spawning of coral? Ive heard alot of it is about the proper flow?

From what I have read, its somthing to do with the moon...thats really all about I know!

So if I stood in front of my reef tank with my pants.... oh never mind!
Lol, you dont want your fish to laugh or your front panel to crack right!? I wouldn't
I have heard that having moonlights on for a certain period at night helps this happen.

I have had this happen with a green pocillopora, it has gotten to the point where is becoming like a pest in my tank.

ive heard the moon light issue also, if the timings right it can happen like twice a year, i think i remember reading that, ill have to check when i get home i think it was in one of the CORAL mags last year ill look for it though.

THis is currently what I am dealing with. On a 6 foot tank my pocilopora colony has offspring on the other side of the tank in few spots growing, as well as the return nozzle and one on the overflow. This has happened within a 5 month period.
