I thought of adding kanamycin since it's broad spectrum but then again, after taking a closer look, the second lump which is on the right has a small opening but it doesn't seem to be directly on the bigger lump but rather a little away from it, this is indeed something i have to worry with since if I move him to a qt there's the risk of him not eating if i indeed need him to eat

Do you believe that these rupturing cysts can be severe if the treatment is delayed? It might be the cause for him to randomly act dead and upside down at times but not always

Sorry, I can’t forecast the significance of the cysts, it depends on the bacteria involved, and then how deeply they are seated (there could be some internally that you can’t see).

I see, if there's bacteria internally then I would imagine that kanamycin would be adequate for a bath since the fish absorb kanamycin? But I'll wait till I get the seachem focus, if the eel is still eating I'll feed him orally, if not, I might try to take a sterile needle and make a small hole in the unpopped cyst. Would popping the cyst be alright if the eel doesn't eat so that I may administer the antibiotics in water?

Fish don’t absorb kanamycin from the water, but marine fish do drink tank water to help them with the osmotic balance of their blood with the water. Antibiotics and other large molecules can get inside them that way. Trouble is, not always in high enough concentrations to do much good. Freshwater fish don’t drink, so adding antibiotics to their water won’t help with internal issues.

Popping cysts or abscesses is something I’ve even seen our veterinarians do - but I always wonder if that is helpful, or based on humans liking to “pop zits”?

Opening an abscess allows them to drain, and can let antibiotics in the water get inside. But that opening causes tissue damage, and of course, handling the eel has some stress/risk associated with it.

After taking another look it seems that the eel has another cyst near it's neck, i wonder from where it's getting all these from or how he got it, it's been about 2 to 3 months since I had him and he's getting it now? I wonder if the recent vinegar additions was the cause but I am not so sure either

I'll do what I need to do if the eel doesn't eat, i believe I won't have a choice but to create a small incision

Thank you so much for the help and information!

I don’t see the vinegar additions causing this.

Thanks so much for the help so far! After the two cysts popping there was an extremely large one between the head and the neck which had popped whilest feeding, i overdosed a bit of metronidazole due to the less toxicity, i didn't want to risk weighing the eel since that could put him off of his food, i thankfully don't see anymore cysts, when should I see improvements if there are any? I took a teaspoon of pellets and added a few drops of multivitamin aswell as metronidazole and focus, I want to make sure that there are improvements because if there aren't any i believe I'll have no choice but to treat his open wound with a different antibiotic

Tough to say when the eel might show improvement, since we really don’t know the cause of this issue. We were focused on antibiotics because that was how your questions were based, but this could also be a viral issue.

Wow, the whole sounding of it just changed, after a week of the treatment if I dont see improvements should I use a different antibiotic such as kanamycin or something else? I am asking now so that I may have a plan incase it gets worse

I believe that antibiotics don't work on viral infections?

Correct, viral diseases are not helped by antibiotics. The best you can do is supportive care. I’m not saying it is viral, just that we cant accurately say one way or another.

Update: i really appreciate the help, thanks to you the issue has been addressed! Though he did have a large wound due to the large cyst bursting but it is healing wonderfully and I have yet to see another cyst! My two doses are already done so should I still go ahead with the third dose tomorrow?

@Jay Hemdal

That's a tough call - I guess I would go with the third dose and then stop to see if the problem abates.
