I came home to a HOB skimmer flowing quickly and white stringy stuff on the black sponges that cover the skimmer returns. It looks like stringy stuff may also be in the skimmer body.

Is this a bacterial bloom? I dose vodka daily, along with regular doses of phyto, but haven't changed up the normal routine. The stringy stuff is only on the skimmer in the sump. The DT and other sump chambers appear string-free.

Strings and bubbles generally = dinos. The second picture looks like it but the first picture is insane. Do you have measurements on phos and nitrate?

It’s probably a bacterial bloom caused by the vodka dosing.

Try increasing the flow if you can around the affected areas to keep it clear and check the amount being dosed is correct.
