Striped trochus snails all bunched together, is this normal?

I added 8 striped trochus snails to my tank 2 days ago and 5 of them are all bunched up next to each other in one corner of my tank. In the past they usually start moving allover my glass. Is this normal?

Recently bought 40 lost about 15 in the first week from three of these grouping as the idiot small blue legged hermits snuck down and ate them. Yikes!

You know I thought about this again, what is your magnesium at in your tank westsideguy? If you have really high magnesium your snails can get atrophy and they almost get stuck in place. If the place you bought them from has less mag than you and then you put them into your tank that’s higher, it will take them time to acclimate. Hope this helps!

I am embarrassed to say I have never tested for magnesium. :(

Well that’s a start! What salt are you using if you don’t mind me asking? The Red Sea salts seem to have very high mag.

My LFS does my water changes and uses Red Sea.

How much rockwork do you have? Trochus aren't big fans of bright light and come out mostly at night. If there's nowhere for them to shade, they may be huddling up like penguins against the cold (light)..

I have about 45 pounds in a 54 gallon DT with plenty of places to hide.

I didn't see them wearing a Roman toga! ;)

My LFS does my water changes and uses Red Sea.

Bingo!! Do yourself a favor and test your magnesium. Don’t always go off of what your LFS says. Those were some of my very first mistakes in reefing.
