Hello -- we are in the design phase of our new home and I had the architect and the structural engineer add sufficient support under the main floor to handle a 400g tank. The structural engineer has specified three 1.75" x 18" LVL beams spaced 12" on center directly underneath the fish tank location.

But, the plumber just looked at the plans and has no idea how to get pipes to the tank since you can't drill through LVL beams without losing their rated support.

For those of you that have a tank on one level and the on the floor below it -- how did you plumb around your supports?

I'm going back to the structural engineer to see if a steel beam would work, but that might be cost ineffective. Don't know yet.

You must have a long span for him to spec 18" LVL's. Changing to steel would probably be your best bet or smaller LVL's with columns underneath.
