Subjective terms! Learning experience? Or annoyance?

*Preface - Yes this is for the "Post a thread contest" :face-savoring-food:

BUT I am curious what other people think when members of the forum use rather subjective terms for describing situations/tanks. How do we get around this "vagueness"
I think there is a glossary on this forum somewhere, but is it feasible to establish quantitive descriptors? IS is possible with how subjective the hobby CAN be??!?!

I.E. "It's a mature tank" "Well established" "Tons of pods"

Personally, It's interesting to see people labeled their tank as well established, when it's been running for three months or so.... I PERSONALLY wouldn't consider it well established, is it ones own experience that determines this? Or lack thereof?

I've had very similar thoughts before, and it often comes up when people talk about Anemone, specifically BTA. Anyone can say I set this tank up a month ago, should I get an anemone and practically everyone will say no, wait 6 months for the tank to mature. In my opinion, in 6 months, it's not the tank that matures but the reefer. BTA need light and stable parameters. Both of those are achievable from practically day 1 if you know what you're doing.

Also to your point @Aaron75 , If you take rock out of a large tank that has been running for years and use that rock alone to create the rockwork of a new tank, then I would consider that tank as mature, or nearly as "mature" as the established tank.

A lot of this stuff is what we in the Navy used to call "tribal knowledge." It is knowledge that isn't written down anywhere, comes from experience, and may or may not be based on fact. If you follow the tribal knowledge you receive from this very forum, you can probably do very well, but you don't really know the causes and effects of your actions. You just do them because they work, and then you tell other people what to do because it worked for you.
