Sump cleaning

Newbie question, how do you clean your sump and chaeto section without harming the pod population? Mine seems to have an accumulation of free floating stuff that lays on the bottom and in the chaeto that dislodges and floats around and goes into the return pump when i stir the chaeto etc. I would like to rinse the chaeto in saltwater and sweep the sump but also don't want to wipe out the pods i have. Thanks for you help!
