Any one know what this compartment of my sump is used for?

Can you post another picture of the whole sump please to better see where this is located on I️t. But my first guess is that this is the first box, so your intake will come through here and you may have some bio balls or something in here I️ believe. Can’t really say without another pic. I️t definitely doesn’t look like refugium box

It's definitely not a refugium compartment. I would say it's the 1st compartment since on the other end it's drilled for external pump.

Vinegar will take the ca deposits off, might help id.

Picture is pretty bad but I think It’s a wet dry sump and the section your asking about is the drip tower for bio balls..
