It would probably be best to put the skimmer before the refugium.

I agree and that third pane where water would go over is no good. It will make air bubbles as water goes over it, which is counter productive to what your trying to do.

So skimmer in same chamber as filter socks then bubble trap then bigger refuge area, then another bubble trap, and pump area.

Ok what about if I flip it and use it backwoods and skimmer before fuge ? So pump will go were the socks are

Dr. safe,

1. Put de skimmer before the biological area;

2. Pay attention to height of the wall which separates the skimmer area. If you put a wrong wall the skimmer doesn't work well;

3. Have in mind the need of using reactors and the necessary dayly and weekly handle of the sump, i.e., Water changes, cleaning etc.

4. Light. Think you have to handle your sump even in the night. So work lights and lightning specifically for the refugium area if you want macro algae.
