MacQac, my suggestion would be to remove the plug on the cup attach so hose and allow the skimmer to run draining water back into the sump. It will usually take about 3 days for the skimmer to adjust and start performing. Keep us all posted.

haha. I'll just have to see what happens... I'll be gone Mon-Thurs with someone else watching it (and my dogs). This will be interesting.
you set it up and now you have to be away? You will learn not to make changes like Plumbing or anything major before going out of town. Leave the skimmer off for 3-4 days let the tank stabilize and things settle out. When you get back start the skimmer if after 3 hours of running then do a full water change as you should have no live stock yet.

No livestock. I just set the tank up. I work 4 days a week out of town. Spouse watches it for me and I have apex set up. I don't want to do a full water change because I just filled it up. Making changes and not going out of town isn't an option...

This is what I decided to do. It seems that the foam has really died down so far, so I'm going to keep at it and take my time, nothing drastic.

When I started my tank 2 months ago the live sand caused a lot of foam in the water I just turned down my pump return so that minimal flow would not cause more foam after 3 days it cleared. With the skimmer pull the cup off and adjust the water till it bubbles right at the top of the neck leave for 24 hours.

My first thought would be something got into the water. I've never used live sand so I can't really be the judge of that being the case. I would do a water change, it can't hurt.

Personally when my skimmer acted liked that I raised it about an inch or two from the bottom(still in the water just less deep) for a temporary amount of time and it seemed to slightly lower the time it took to fill up, however your sump didn't have that high of a water level, so I don't know if it would even help lol sorry just trying to help and shoot anything out that worked for me, I cant stand it when my Tanks give my trouble.

Well I understand the going out of town not an option. I also understand the not wanting to do water changes as it adds cost, time and labor. I have a 300 gallon system and I don't do water changes. I have already read where just letting everything run with plug out of skimmer cup the foam has slowed down. I expect it to have stopped foaming when you are back in town and a water change will not be needed. Have fun, enjoy and just go slow on changes. I personally would not recommend a complete water change on a tank with livestock.

I've not kept them, but green chromis have a reputation for bullying the smallest ... until there's only one. I suspect that the best way around that tendency might be to keep so many chromis that one fish doesn't get all the beatings. How many is that? I don't know. Five? Fifteen?? Fifty-three???

Sorry but didn't read every post, but did you treat the water with anything to remove chlorine? I have found that if you use stress coat or anything to remove chlorine my skimmer acts the same way.

No I used RODI water but I did use live sand so I think that might have had something to do with it. It seems to be taking extra long to get the cycle going too. I'm just now seeing a tiny ammonia spike.
