Sump modified/design new

Hello reefers,
This is first time I play with a sump. I bought an 2nd sump and my current setup is below:
1) The water come directly to the floss filter and go to the skim chamber then return bumps. I do not know if it is enough in term of filter or not.





2) should I modified the current sump or just make a new one to replace. The goal is improve the filtration (still use floss filter and flow. It is necessary or not? Below is my drawing

The drawing didn't attach but that's the design of a typical sump. You can add additional chambers for different types of filtration.

Example: ESHOPPS has some sumps that have a sock/floss chamber, a refugium chamber, a skimmer chamber, a filter media chamber, and a return chamber.

Current sump works.
New design also works.

I could suggest to configure your baffles to where your skimmer chamber always stays at a consistent water level.
Your return chamber should be able to fluctuate and when it drops, ATO kicks in to refill.

This is am example from my old 180 gallon reef sump.

Water comes in and goes under 1st baffle, then over the next baffle for the drain. Water for over the next baffle then over the next baffle again. Then under last baffle for the return.

Here's another example of my current sump on a 50 gallon cube reef.

Thanks. The baffle wher water flow from skim chamber to return bump is designed for flow under. So, so I think it will make water lv on skim chamber is not stable.
I am just concerned if modified current sump or just make a new one, which one is more convenience and budget wise.

Honestly, a sump can be as simple as a tote with a return pump in it with no baffles.

You absolutely want your skimmer section to be stable and not fluctuate!
That's the under/over design.


It all depends on what you want and how you want to ruin it.

That is the skimmer valve. It's an IOAIO skimmer.
It's pretty quiet skimmer and is skims pretty well but VERY temperamental!

I've always liked my bio media in bags.
It's just easier and tidy.

Interesting, haven't seen that design, Looks fun :P
I bag up media for FW, but havent used any in my SW. Just live rocks. The bag idea will let me fill in more.

Here is a picture of the Sump I just swapped into my system made from an All-Glass 125gallon Aquarium. Sump is configured from Right to Left in picture with Inlet Chamber, Floss above Media Chamber, Fuge, Skimmer Chamber, Return Pump Chamber.

All I have in the Skim Chamber is the pump for my skimmer. I run a massive external venturi type due to my bio load. Nearly 50 fish in a 300g system. including 8 Tangs and a very large Rabbit fish.
