I have a 40 gallon breeder currently with no sump. I am seriously thinking of putting a sump on this tank. What is the best way to go? I'm thinking this overflow "PF-300 HOB OVERFLOW" with either a homemade sump (possibly just another smaller aquarium, or a sump that someone here might recommend"

Thanks

I’d go drilled overflow with no hob overflow as some times they break and flood or even cause fires.

Drilled 100%. Modular marine or reef synergy make great products. Exotic marine sells baffle kits for sumps if you want to try some DIY

Hang on back overflows can work fine. Eshopps overflows work great, just get the ...

And use a flow that is less than one drain or U over the top. These don't fail unless they get clogged and if you check it regularly they both will not get clogged and these self start after a power failure.

As someone who has used both, I prefer the drilled underneath as it is the easiest to work on if one of the bulkheads fail.

Check my build thread for a cheap sump. You can get a local glass shop to cut you 1/4" glass for baffles. Just make sure they are smaller than the inside width of the tank.
