So i am redoing all my plumbing and adding a filter roller. I am using this size/style sump to fit in a specific space under my stand. So i am thinking about turning the old filter sock area that didn't work well into a fuge and the old skimmer chamber is where i will put the filter roller set up. The tank only has 1 drain and 1 return set up currently in a single corner overflow. (48x24x18) So i am trying to figure out the best way to set up the plumbing if it would be to just use the main 1inch drain and set up a manifold of sorts to divert some flow unto the fuge area while dumping the rest into the filter roller. I am thinking about swapping to an over the back return so i can utilize the what was return as an emergency drain set up.

I think you'd likely have to manifold to divert part of the flow to the roller mat. I'd recommend using a ball valve on the pipe going to the Fuge section and 45° bends on the pipe going to the roller mat to decrease flow reduction due to friction loss.

With the ball valve you'd be able to restrict the flow going to the Fuge to ensure enough flow gets to the roller mat.

i would think i want most of the flow to the mat and only a small amount to the fuge

Yep, that's why I suggested the ball valve to the Fuge so you can turn that down to make sure enough flow gets to the mat.

Another option is to get a second return pump rated for the flow you want going to the Fuge and plumb it from beneath the roller mat into the drain/Fuge/sock section?

That’s a good idea. I have never done a true fudge. I have tried macro algae but it never lives.

I did a pair of Clowns and some Anemones for my Fuge. Haven't gotten any Macros to add yet. Gotta start getting my nutrients back up.
