So I'm getting ready to setup a sump and ditch the canister. Just wondering how important is a bubble trap and because of this why are bubbles bad for the saltwater aquarium?
I a newb too but when I built mine I only used two baffles for my bubble trap. Water flows over then under and I get no bubbles in my return section. I put some filter floss and polyester media between the baffles as a mechanical filter some people put a sponge there. I put them 2" apart.
Depends on sump size and flow u have through it as well as if you're using a herbie or Durso (Durso allows more air) and also ur baffles height and water level. If bubbles reach return pump they get reduced to micro bubbles which take away from the beauty of the setup and make the water less clear. They're also a pain when takin pictures.
You might get away if sumo is long enough and flow isn't too fast and bubbles are allowed to surface and pop before return. Yet a slow flow in sump can have consequences.
As the only way to really check is after tank is running would advise to at least have good planned baffles at least and bubble trap if u can fit in your sump. If space is not an issue they can't do any harm.
