So I built this skimmer about a year ago out of necessity from parts I had lying around.I've been thinking of building a newer skimmer out of acrylic but It has been working so well I haven't gone thru with it yet.I figured i'd share it with everyone.Other then the pump(i used a mag-7),it only cost around $30 to make.

Parts list-

Venturi inlet - @$25
3 liter soda bottle
Large skippy jar
@ 2ft tubing to fit pump to venturi
2 rubber washers
@ 2ft large airline tubing-for drain
Gatorade bottle

As you can see in the pic it works very well, removing about a gatorade bottle worth of thick waste per week. Here is a simple diagram. I don't use any valves and the skimmer is adjusted by its depth in the sump. Its great on a tight budget, and good for a laugh. The orange soda was good too!

Great job that is all a skimmer is. A lot of people like the fancy names and spend a bunch of money but yours will do the same job.

you can even cut the cost by using air stone.....I am using one for my 40 gal system....

This makes me want to mess around with some of the cheaper PVC designs... Great work on yours! :D

I thought about making one of these but with a 2l for my nano Because the 2L is pretty much the same shape as a normal skimmer. Great job btw cant ever beat 30 bucks.
