I have a 56l tank with no sump or weir and I have plenty of gunk on the water surface.
I tried a surface skimmer attachment for my Fluval canister filter but it was too big and long for the tank.

I'm tempted to get a little surface skimmer, such as the Eheim Skim 350.

Can anyone recommend a good unit, small and more importantly, quiet. The tank is in the bedroom.

No suggestion on a surface skimmer, but you can dab a piece of paper on the top to remove the film (sort of lay the paper flat on the surface and remove it immediately)

As mentioned above, paper towel will work.

But ideally, you would have a powerhead aimed at the surface to agitate it and move that gunk into the water where the filtration can filter it out. Surface gunk is unsightly, it cuts the oxygen exchange, and it cuts the light penetration.

There is no filter or sump, a powerhead would just move it around.

OP, you don't need to run the surface skimmer 24/7, just run it would you are not there, put it on a smart plug. Tunze 9001 skimmer comes with a surface attachment but I can not recommend that skimmer, it skims poorly and is noisy.
