Swannyson7's 180g mixed reef

I appreciate the kind words, but if anyone has acro envy it's me after seeing those pics of your tank. You have one of the cleanest setups I've ever seen with none of the "pest corals" that are a plague in my system. I honestly wish I could start fresh so that I didn't have to constantly battle the anthelia, GSP, & protopalys.

Haven't updated in a while, so here it goes. I've had some real ups and down over the past couple months... first the bad. To help battle my aiptasia, I got a matted filefish. He wiped out every trace of aiptasia in the tank, but I should have taken him out once the job was done. When he ran out of aiptasia, he started picking at my LPS & polyps, wiping out a red lobo, several zoa colonies, and did some real damage to a wellso & scoly. Then, while working around the house I had some airborne contaminants (sawdust, drywall dust, cleaners) make their way into the tank and finish off the zoa colonies that were barely hanging on. All in all, I lost colonies of goochsters, rastas, CARs, Dragon Eyes, Sunny D's, fruit loops, and RPEs. A polyp or two of each remains so given enough time they'll grow back, but it was tough to see years worth of grow dwindle within a couple days. To top it all off, I lost two fish. I came home from work to find my Regal Angel half consumed by a 10" GBTA, and a majestic angel that was in QT didn't make it. The Regal was eating well and had fattened up significantly since I first got him, so I don't know what happened with him. The Majestic looked great at the LFS and was eating from day 1. Shortly after getting him home, he developed a bacterial infection and once that was overcome, broke out with ich. After about a 3 week battle to get him healthy, he perished in my QT tank.

On to the good news... The SPS didn't skip a beat and growth is still great despite the problems I experienced. I was a bit discouraged after the problems with the tank and started getting lazy with AA dosing so my colors suffered a bit, but after 2 weeks being back on track the coloration is coming back nicely. I moved a bit of stuff around, mounted some frags, and trimmed back some of the anthelia (a never ending project). I also finally added a strip 24 of Royal Blue Crees to my tank that have been sitting in my shed since last summer. They're on a dimmable driver and hooked up through the controller to give a more gradual dawn/dusk cycle and to give a bit more "pop" to the tank. It's a pretty ghetto fabulous setup, but it does the job. To replace my regal angel, I was tempted by my LFS to purchase a Sohal that they got from another reefer. I had pretty much ruled out adding more tangs due to the aggression of my yellow tang, but with the size (about 7") & aggression level of the sohal, I couldn't say no. They had the sohal in their system for a couple weeks and he looked extremely healthy, eating like a pig. Due to his size, I went against my better judgement and added him striaght to the tank without QT. {Pauses for the verbal onslaught from everyone} I was afraid that putting a 7" tang in a 45g QT system would only add unneeded stress and would probably result in more problems than it was worth in this case. On to the pics...

Scott, sorry to hear about the losses, especially the Regal. We totally feel your pain with the zoas, but our Regal Angel is the one who wiped out all of our colorful ones, lol. We keep the few we have left in our frag tank now. Your new Sohal is gorgeous and your corals are looking shweeeet!

That Sohal is gorgeous and your tank looks great.

Agree with above Scott. Tank is looking great. Amazing how big some of those acro colonies have gotten. I love my Sohal as well. He's a bull in a china shop but love the activity and coloration! So sorry to hear about the Regal. Bummer for sure. Awesome pics!

Thanks guys. The regal angel was my dream fish and I'm sure that some day I'll try again. Craig, the colonies have been growing really well since adding the calcium reactor. They would actually be quite a bit larger if it weren't for my overzealous fragging for a frag swap a couple months ago. I brought over 200 frags ranging in size from one to three inches and now you can't even tel that most things were ever cut. The green slimer colony on the right was taken down to a couple inch nub a few months back, but as you can see, it has grown back with a vengeance. I guess it's a good problem to have, but some corals are growing too quickly and keep touching each other. Luckily I haven't been out of town at all, so I've ben able to keep an eye on things and trim as necessary.

looking great Scott! I love that Sohal, much better choice than Angels IMHO, you have have clams!
Somehow I knew you were going to say that! The regal was a model citizen during the time he was in the tank. Never caught him nipping any clam mantles or polyps. He seemed a bit intrigued by the coco worm, but for the most part he stuck to nipping at Acro polyps. A lack of PE is a small price to pay in return for housing such a beautiful fish... he will be missed. :squigglemouth:

Your tank is awesome!!! Love the scape and your pictures are sweet!!!

Thanks guys! The side shot was the best of several attempts, but I wish I could get more DOF without the motion blur of the fish. I tried boosting the ISO to achieve that, but the image was so grainy that it was trash. One of these days I'll figure it out...

Your build is beautiful and heavy from the looks of it and will support more than it's share of weight. Nice decorative finish!
What type of paint did you use for the finish coat?

Thanks! Nothing fancy for the finish, just primed it with Kilz and used some white Behr latex that I had left over from painting cielings in my house.
Loving it Scott! BTW your package is well on it's way;)
Thanks Chris! One man's trash is another man's treasure...

Swanny - Long time man! Sorry to hear about the losses but your tank is still looking great! And i love the new Sohal. Congrats on the new leds too...im sure the pop is nice!

Beautiful stand :) I built my own stand and canopy as well. The stand isn't quite as fancy as yours is however :)

The canopy houses 2 AI Sol Blue LEDs and 2 T5s in the center (until I can trade them for more Sol Blues :) )
Good luck with the rest of your set up, I can't wait to see it finished!

I thought if I added these pics it may give you an idea for your canopy. Tons of room inside and it's in keeping of the stand style you built. I found that making the doors as I did, I have plenty of room to get around inside as well as reaching to the SB as well. I hope you don't mind that I posted the pics here.

Great looking tank! You should start a tank thread and show it off? I'd like to see some more pic's of your aquascaping...
