I currently have a 55g FOWLR running, it’s been in my ownership for about a month or so, but has been running for a couple of years. Clearly it can keep fish and has been cycled properly, but it’s been cycled with a HOB filter.
I’ve added a HOB protein skimmer that’s getting a good amount of skimmate but I still need to get a new pump to optimize its performance. But all the while part of me really wants to run a sump instead for obvious reasons. Would it disrupt the nitrogen cycle to replace the HOB filter with an overflow and into a 10g sump?
Any suggestions concerning filtration is greatly appreciated. Or anything at all for that matter lol

Hey brill welcome to the club! Sumps are awesome, I highly recommend you go for it. As for disrupting your biological filter I would just keep some of the dirty filter material from the hob and put it into your new sump for a while. Or even run the hob on the sump.

But if you have lots of live rock in your tank then you should be good to just ditch the hob filter and not worry about any of that.

I would move forward with sump.
Eshopps makes easy to use overflow boxes which are easy to plumb
Adding 1ml per 10 gallons of liquid bacteria daily for 10 days will boost bacteria culture
HOB is ok mechanical filtration but offers no chemical filtration

I was actually checking out the Eshopps, any suggestion on a good Overflow and return pump? Unsure of my turnover rate but I have a 55 and assume 10x turnover rate will be good enough for LPS(?)
